Being Precise

June 21, 2014

I very much like being precise.  During my first degree, being precise was very important. I thought about it a lot and practiced and practiced.  My Masters was about trying up loosen up a bit, but I mostly like Precise.  I guess I feel it’s finished.

It wasn’t until l started assisting artists (Jamie Shovlin and Tania Kovats) though that I really learnt to be precise.  It’s not my work anymore, not my hand.  I have to draw like them now, so being precise goes to a whole new level.  Plus it’s going to be seen by a lot more people, the pressures on.  Suddenly it’s not just my reputation, it’s that of someone who has worked hard to get to the point of being able to employ someone to complete a drawing for them.

Printing can be the most satisfying precise activity ever.  Even the mistakes have sharp angles and an overlay creates a new crisp colour.  This must be why I love it so much.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m not a neat and tidy freak, my house is a mess, but I guess that might have something to do with the fact my life’s not finished yet.
